En 2017, la ville a subi une déconnexion physique avec le sud de la province lorsque le chemin de fer a été emporté par une importante crue des eaux. Pendant plus de 18 mois, la ville est demeurée isolée du reste du continent, accessible par avion ou bateau uniquement. C’est à ce moment que nous avons été mandatés pour la construction du Polar Bears International House, le premier bâtiment construit sur l’artère principale de Churchill depuis 2009, marquant sa renaissance de la ville.

Le Polar Bears International House, un bâtiment à caractère public, a une esthétique clairement nordique. Sa forme et ses couleurs vives s’inspirent des mégastructures locales et détonne fièrement dans le paysage urbain.

La nécessité de construire cette installation découle du nombre croissant du personnel, des invités et des scientifiques qui se rendent à Churchill, en particulier pendant la saison d’observation des ours. Le PBI House récemment inaugurée fournit à l’organisation des bureaux, une zone d’interprétation et un espace de réunion publique favorisant le dialogue entre la communauté locale et des experts en visite sur les questions relatives à la conservation des ours polaires dans l’Arctique.

In 2017, the city suffered a physical disconnection with the south of the province when the railway was swept away by a major flood. For more than 18 months, the city remained isolated from the rest of the continent only accessible by boat or plane. It was then that we were commissioned to construct the Polar Bears International House, the first building constructed on Churchill’s main thoroughfare since 2009, thus marking its rebirth in the city.

The Polar Bears International House, a public building, has a clearly Nordic aesthetic. Its shape and bright colors are inspired by local mega structures and stand out proudly in the urban landscape.

The need to build this facility arose from the growing roster of staff, guests, and scientists traveling to Churchill, particularly during bear-viewing season. The recently inaugurated PBI House provides the organization with office space, an interpretative area and a public meeting space fostering dialogue between the local community and visiting experts on issues dealing with polar bear conservation in the Arctic.
